Week 5 Final story (The Amazing Super/Spider-Man)


As far back as 2011, reports have been coming in of a sometimes masked others not, vigilante preventing crimes around our city. The first known report was submitted by an elderly women who told officers that she noticed man in her yard attempting to steal her show Pugs (dogs). She claimed that a boy flew in from the sky, knocked the thief down and tied him to the tree nice and tight, to wait for the police to arrive. The reports and stories similar to this one have been coming in on a consistent basis. Pleased residents of our town have been voicing their praise for the heroic efforts this boy has shown to keep our city safe. On the other hand the mayor and Chief of police have been known to voice their skepticism on the overall good that civilian vigilantism brings our town. Last year the Police Chief Tim Vasquez said that civilians only place themselves and others in danger when they attempt to bring people who commit crimes to justice.  None the less the boys efforts have been noticed and praised. The name given to him by some of the first beneficiaries of his heroism in Super/Spider-Man.

Down wind at the Disney movie studios, they took an interest in these articles and stories. Trying to keep up with the Marvel comic series of superheros (The Avengers, X-men, etc.). they purchased the rights to Super/Spider-Man’s story. The Super/Spider-Man, donated all proceeds from that financial windfall to the Texas Rangers Baseball team, in an effort they would spend it on an actual big league Catcher. They are making the hero their new star in their latest superhero movie. With an overall budget already set at 150 millions dollars, they (Disney) are not shying away from attempting to make this the best super-hero movie ever made.

In between acting and saving lives in the evening, LJ Galvan II has not had the time to do the routine pre-release talk show circuit rounds, to promote the film. But Disney’s marketing Director has taken the challenge on personally to pick up the slack, and he does not anticipate anything less than sold out crowds at every theater across the country on opening night.

Assignment 2 create: Probably 2 stars tops.

Step 1: Think of something (a story) that if you read in the paper would make you laugh.

Step 2: Using whatever resources you have at your disposal, create a template for a newspaper.

Step 3: Write a up a story that would make you and others laugh, it could be an inside joke that only a handful of your ds106 friends would get, or a slice of your sense of humor. Anything and everything is acceptable.

Step 4: Publish, so we could all enjoy your work. (The first newspaper story is my submission).


Week 4 summary

I read Roger Eberts “how to read a movie” first, it was pretty informative. I grew up watching his show on weekend mornings (with Jean Siskel), so I was happy to read more and get a feel for how he started to read or give opinions on films he watched. When he was a Professor at Chicago University he incorporated a “STOP” policy when one of his students waned to voice an opinion on what he or she thinks about that scene. I thought that was a pretty democratic way of teaching and film professors everywhere incorporate that method into their classes.

Then I moved onto watching the 3 of the several clips we were given as an option to view. I chose 2 Kubrick’s and the Tarantino one. I chose then because I like the only 3 Kubrick movies  have seen and knew he was a pretty unorthodox director. I guess the same feeling can be put towards my feelings towards Tarantino, but in my opinion he does make quite a few over the top and pointless films.

The video assignments I did were a learning experience for me. I went to see an expert in the digital tutorial center in the ITCC. the gentlemen who sat down with me was knowledgeable and helpful. He explained to me for a good 15 minutes, on the ins and outs on basic film making. Without that tutorial I think I would have spent 5-10 more hours on learning all the tabs and programs.

Then I created my first video assignment. I went into the process thinking that I was doomed. Once I finished it I felt pretty decent about what I was able to do with the basic knowledge I had on film making. The process took roughly 4-5 hours (should have taken 2-3 but I was going at beginner speed). I utilized the digital studio in the ITCC center, they have great programs already installed on the MACS, so I saved a little time their. The only down side was that I could not get any question answered because no one works in the center per say.

Here is my assignment bank publication. This is the first one I have done so far. The instuctions are below as well.

LJ Galvan – Small

Step 1. Find something you care about and gather pictures and videos about it). It could be your parents or panda bears, anything you think about often.

Step 2. Create a short film, using i movie or any program you feel comfortable with. No restrictions no limitations on how to piece together your short film.

Step 3. Place music that encompasses your thoughts on the subject matter.

Step 4. Place credits at the end letting the audience know who or what you paid homage to.

I wanted to keep this open and with as little parameters as possible. I found that overtly restricting instructions on how to do these assignments kill creativity and force most people to reject the challenge.

Ira and Jad had the same philosophy towards story telling. They both liked to have a sequence to their story with limited jumping around in time. In my write up of the two, I reference how I thought this was a good foundation for telling a good story, linking Pulp Fictions (jumping around in time) sequence to the opposite of their teachings. A good example would be Forrest Gump or Goodfellas. Keep an order and the story flowing, helps the listener grasps what is taking place. Also it helps them want to know what is going to happen next.

The stories I heard were “Remember the Baby”, “Failing” and “The Third Party”. Out of the three I liked “The Third Party” the most. It was suspenseful and kept me interested. The music fit well with the story, the characters were a little more developed (maybe because it was the longest one I heard) and the conclusion was not foreseen (at least to me it wasn’t). I liked “Remember the Baby” the least. Probably because I thought the women in that story was weak and not a nurturing person. She essentially had a stroke from yelling at the top of her lungs at a child who was crying. At the end, when she is in the hospital she wants to hold the child and be good to it for helping her survive the stroke. I thought that was strange, you can’t change that fast (meaning you can’t go from a person incapable of nurturing and caring for a child to what she became).

I left a comment on schizophrenicamid page. He had some pretty dark writings so I didn’t want to rock the boat per say. I just offered words of encouragement and affirmations. I commented on the student whose page is named “The little things in life” also. On hers I just spoke about how I wish I had a more fuel efficient car. Lastly I commented on “The song remains the same” mainly I just shared my thoughts on how the class is going for me and how I do things. So far all my comments have come from spammers I think (with the exception of yours of course), so I am waiting to hear from classmates on how bad or quasi decent they think the things I have done are.

Looking back at what I learned this week, I can say that I am learning exponentially more (on how to work with various programs and sites) than I ever have. Just basic tools I never knew existed that come installed on a computer have blown my mind, and are very easy to use (user interface wise). I hope my work is getting better, by the end of this course I anticipate not being a computer illiterate. Which I find strange that I consider myself that now. When I was in the Navy all I did was work with programs, searched and reported on bad guys from my results from using those programs. I guess there is a big difference in being told you have to know how to use something and learning how to do it for a grade.

My two assignment ideas:

  1. Create a funny lost and found sign and take a picture of you hanging it up on a bulletin board or tree.
  2. Create a photo collage/slide show to your favorite song, with pictures that you feel capture the meaning behind the song.

We all know who Ted Cruz is by now, if you didn’t, he is that other crazy bastard from Texas who wants to be President. He says more selfish, back wards, not coalition building stuff than any other candidate (including Rand Paul). He has a huge base with he Tea Party crowd (a majority of which is comprised on no educated southern Caucasians), but other than that he is a dog and pony show who has no real intention of winning a national election or even a single primary state.
